All over the country children supported National Bike Week and Newmarket College was no exception. The PE Department, which has been exceptionally pro-active in bringing new sports and opportunities to local children, organised an initiative with the Go-ride Scheme. Building on the tremendous successes England had at the recent Beijing Olympics, funds have been made available to cycling to introduce youngsters to the sport as well as encouraging a more healthy lifestyle. Alison Lilly, the British Cycling Coach, is working with the Go-Ride Scheme in bringing cycling to the attention of as many children as they can and Newmarket College arranged for Alison to come into the College on Wednesday 17th June to take part in two training sessions. Go-Ride supplied the bikes and as many as 80 students took part. There will also be an inter-school competition this term and students are encouraged to affiliate themselves with local Go-Ride Clubs. The Schools Sports Partnership, in liaison with Newmarket College, ran a multi-skilled Athletics event, at the same time, for students from surrounding Primary schools as part of their ongoing multi-schools competitions initiative, ably assisted by the College's Sports Leadership Team. |
